Business Management and Administration focuses on effectively organizing, planning and directing the different business functions to ensure the smooth processes of business operations. Due to the broad scope of management, this cluster often requires knowledge from all the different clusters. Some other skills that are needed are strong leadership, communication and problem solving.
Leadership: Being able to efficiently and efficiently lead a team of people from diverse backgrounds is key to business management and administration. This cluster is the glue that holds businesses together, so it is important to be able to lead people from different departments with varying levels of experience.
Good communication: Having clear communication with all departments throughout the business is important for this cluster because it ensures that everyone is on the same page. Miscommunication or ineffective communication can not only waste time but also cost businesses lots of money.
Basic finance knowledge: This cluster works with many different business functions and one of those is finance. Having a basic understanding of finance can help with creating a deeper connection between departments.
Basic marketing knowledge: In addition to working with the finance department another key component of business is marketing, so having basic marketing knowledge can help you when working with the marketing department and help build connections across the company.
Project Management: Business Management includes a lot of projects across different teams, so you must be able to manage them. This includes being able to assess risk, build timelines, assign roles, and more.
Adaptability: For business management it is important to be able to quickly adapt when working with others. Many unexpected situations may come up, and it will be your responsibility to find ways to solve these problems.
DECA: Look into Business Administration or management events such as, Human Resources Management or Community Awareness Project. These will teach the fundamental skills of business management.
Internship opportunities: Shadowing or internship opportunities can allow you to see how busineseses manage projects in the real world and what skills are needed.
Student government: Provides opportunities to work with others and manage large projects; these skills directly translate into those used in business management and administration.
Becoming president of a club: Even if it's a small club, learning to manage the club meetings and projects will help develop skills like those used in business management.
Summer programs (Wharton essentials of leadership, Berkeley business academy for youth): These summer programs can help foster leadership skills and teach the basics marketing, finance and more.
